Saturday Voices with historians Charles van Onselen and Jon Hyslop in conversation about a neglected aspect of South Africa's social history, that of bank robberies, shipwrecks, highwaymen, treasure hunts and fugitives in the time between the discovery of gold at the Witwatersrand and the outbreak of the war, as portrayed in Van Onselen's new book, Masked Raiders Irish Banditry in Southern Africa, 1880-1899 will be held at Boekehuis Cnr. Lothbury and Fawley streets, Auckland Park (parking available) on Saturday at 12pm for 12:30pm. RSVP by today on 011 482 3609 boekehuis@boekehuis.co.za
"Masked Raiders is an indispensable social history. Not only does it reveal a neglected aspect of South Africa's past and develop a cracked, distant mirror of our present, it also takes its place among those studies that demonstrate that individuals and societies emerge along lines of movement that respect neither the convenience of states nor the normative logic of nationalism." Michael Titlestad in the Sunday Independent.
Grab those calendars. August is a hot month for special authors and Pretoria News/WritersSpeak book lunches. With the joyous Jodi Picoult, the darling Tannie Evita and superman Lewis Gordon Pugh all making their way to Pretoria, it's a great time for readers.
On August 6, there's Picoult, who will be speaking about her latest book, House Rules, that deals with Asberger's Syndrome. Tannie Evita will be coming our way on August 10. In Kossie Sikelela, she invites the world to her table
Achieving the Impossible, written by Lewis Gordon Pugh, says more about the author than anything else could. He will be the guest speaker on August 16.
To book your seat, call Megan on 012 667 1071 or 083 556 1899.
